PERFORMANCE SITAR SERIES. "Khayal and Thumri
in Raga Yaman and Raga Pilu"

Deobrat Mishra
For our 16th title it
was decided to add a different flavor to the
DVD's and for this we picked Deobrat Mishra
of the Pramila Mishra Academy of Indian
Classical music. Deobrat (Debu) is a noted
exponent of the Benares Music Gharana, a
famous vocal based tradition of Varanasi,
India and brings his unique style of
teaching and playing to help aspiring
artists learn the sitar. One of the
remarkable traits of the Benares style is
the lyrical form and flow of the
compositions that stick with you long after
hearing them and the presentation here is
learnable in either Kharaj Pancham (Ravi
Shankar) or Gandhar Pancham (Vilayat Khan)
style.
This first DVD by Debu
has a number of lessons worth of material,
the first part is geared towards an advanced
beginner, talented newcomers will also
benefit of course as he takes you step by
step through an old composition in Raga
Yaman. The second part will appeal to those
at intermediate level and beyond as he gives
a solid introduction into the Thumri style
of playing through teaching a composition
and additional instruction and demonstration
in gat vistar which is a free flowing
improvisation within metered time.
