Rain City Music

Rain City Music is the creation of Lars Jacobsen and partners and friends in India. It is mainly an online source serving musicians interested in Indian Classical music worldwide. Online, we are open 24 hours a day however if you wish to come visit simply email or call and we'll be happy to give you directions and set up an appointment!

Perhaps a bit of history?

I have long been involved with instruments from India, unofficially for a great many years and then officially in 2001 when I developed Sitars Etc., which I ran for several years. A rather demanding day job at the time forced me to either close the site or let someone else run it. Fortunately I found someone with a great interest (Alex Salinas) but sadly he passed away in 2007. October of 2007 found me running Sitars Etc. again with the goal of purchasing it and I had assumed various numbers of instruments which were in production at the time. Had I not done so, the Srishti and Parampara line of instruments would have ceased to exist. I didn't want to see this happen as my friends in India and I had worked very hard in the beginning to get things as perfect as possible.

Unfortunately as I returned from a trip to India I realized it wasn't possible to assume final ownership of Sitars Etc. due to a number of obstacles and so after discussion with my friends in India it was decided to open Rain City Music and continue on....although with a somewhat different format.

The Future?

We will focus purely on instruments and training materials and related accessories only. We do not wish to conquer the online sitar and tabla market and flog you mercilessly with inferior or kitsch products but rather only carry what WE would own ourselves. I personally feel there is a niche market of musicians that want to own instruments that are exceptional and expect a level of service and commitment that goes along with such instruments. I guarantee to provide this to you as before!!

We'll be keeping things simple as before and have more of a focus on training products. And it has already begun, we've filmed our first of many Sitar instruction DVD's with Tabla soon to follow. There are many people interested in Indian Classical Music who may have had some basic exposure but cannot continue lessons due to distance or other reasons. With this in mind we felt compelled to work on instructional DVD's, we had been discussing it since even before the first site I started. Finally, years later, things have fallen in place and we hope to have a large number of offerings over the next decade.

With regard to instruments from Srishti Musical its been decided to cut back production to a more manageable level. They have been very popular but I learned that pressures on the maker for more than he could produce had not been met with the same level of success as when it was started and so production will be capped at 30 instruments per year with many models that were not popular being discontinued. This assures a quality comparable to the best makers of India...Student models have also been discontinued from Srishti as well as Parampara tablas.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions, there's never any obligation!
