Hemen Sitar
Full
decoration, colored penwork concert sitar from Hemen
Sen.
A big story here, too long to tell. Was
originally going to pick up 3 instruments there but
settled on just this one for the time being. It's an
interesting piece made of mahogany with a slightly
wider gourd than the tabli which is a little over 13
inches, I like it! Comfortable to play, it has a
very open sound, not quite 'Ravi Shankar' type but
what struck me was the unusually long sustain of the
MA ~ baaj string. Also the carvings on the gulu and
tumba are very nice in the angur patta (grape leaf)
design. Modern style mogra ~ grommets and unique
inlay on the sympathetic pegs which are a thinner
profile, easy to tune. A nice low action without
interference. Natural horn bridge.....Beautiful quartersawn wood used for the
neck along with an old aged piece of tun wood for
the tabli. The top tumba is natural (after I
insisted) and looks like it's made the same place as
the Hiren Roy top gourds. Comes with one extra
sympathetic peg with same design just in case....2 thumbs up for this
sitar!....We plan on carrying Hemen sitars in the
future however cannot do custom orders as we only
pick them up personally in India from this maker.
Air shipped and carefully handled......
In stock, it's the last new
one we'll every carry, rest in peace Hemen Babu! (Hemen
Sen passed away on January 2, 2010.)
