Sanjay Rikhiram
Pre-owned Kharaj
Pancham full decoration
Anoushka Shankar style
in tun wood
This instrument
originally bought by me in Delhi special for a
customer in 2014 and carried back to the US.
This is one of a
pair of structures made for a sitar order by
Anoushka Shankar at the time. The structure is tun
wood/mahogany made
by Anil Halder in Kolkata who makes the highest
level instruments for both of the Rikhiram named
stores, this one from Sanjay Sharma. One was fitted
for her and the other is this one which I had fitted
in a more standard setting as her action is
extremely low. I played both and had the same sound
but the original owner wanted a 10.5mm action height
which is 'normal' for most players
This sitar has
an open jawari, progressive curved frets and
traditional grommet sympathetics. In very good
condition, the polish is very dark with red
highlights (most pictures had to be lightened due to
our cloudy weather/light)
7 main strings and 13 sympathetics in kharaj pancham.
Top tumba is natrual gourd.
Very good sound and balanced easy smpathetic response and not too
thin in the tabli. Bridges are nylon and this
instrument includes a fitted replica resin main and
sympathetic bridge made here. There is a built-in AKG C411PP
pickup installed internally with a standard XLR jack
near the langot. All fitting, polish, etc. updated
here as it was sent to me for consignment. Comes
with fiberglass hard case and outer cover and
accessories pack.
