Rain City Music

Rain City Music is the creation of Lars Jacobsen and partners and friends in India. It is mainly an online source serving musicians interested in Indian Classical music worldwide. Online, we are open 24 hours a day however if you wish to come visit simply email or call and we'll be happy to give you directions and set up an appointment!

Perhaps a bit of history?

I have long been involved with instruments from India, unofficially for a great many years since 1981 and then officially in 2001 when I developed Sitars Etc., which I ran for several years. A rather demanding day job at the time forced me to either close the site or let someone else run it. Fortunately I found someone with a great interest (Alex Salinas) but sadly he passed away in 2007. October of 2007 found me running Sitars Etc. again with the goal of purchasing it and I had assumed various numbers of instruments which were in production at the time. Had I not done so, the Srishti line of instruments would have ceased to exist. I didn't want to see this happen as my friends in India and I had worked very hard in the beginning to get things as perfect as possible.

The Future?

Sitars Etc. was phased out and now it's just RCM. Things have settled down over the years and I've adapted to the dynamics of business in this area. Teaching and repairs are now taking a lot more time. I have a handful of makers I've stuck with who are also wonderful friends of many years

We will focus purely on instruments and training materials and related accessories only. We do not wish to conquer the online sitar and tabla market and flog you mercilessly with inferior or kitsch products but rather only carry what WE would own ourselves. I personally feel there is a niche market of musicians that want to own instruments that are exceptional and expect a level of service and commitment that goes along with such instruments. I figure whoever finds me then it's all good.

I'll keep things as simple as possible as before with an additional focus on training and repairs. There are many people interested in Indian Classical Music who may have had some basic exposure but cannot continue lessons due to distance or other reasons. With this in mind we felt compelled early on to work on instructional DVD's, we had been discussing it since even before SitarsEtc started in 2001. Finally, years later, things have fallen in place and we now have a large number of offerings!

With regard to instruments I try to have everything in stock but often have to wait. If you want something good, we can deliver. This means waiting sometimes so for those who need instant click gratification we're probably not for you....Please feel free to contact us with any questions, there's never any obligation!
