Karasek Sound by
RA Sitarmaker half decoration Ravi Shankar style Sitar
(pre-owned)
Recently found this instrument in Vancouver
from a friend who ordered it back in July of 2005.
This was one of the sitars commissioned by Tony
Karasek of
Karasek Sound
built by RA Sitarmaker in Miraj India built
to his specifications. They are uncommon, this is
the third one we've had here and probably the best
one that I've seen. The owner played it a few times
and then decided sitar wasn't for him so it has sat
in 'as new' condition since, the jawari, etc. is
untouched.
The sound is very open of course, Ravi
Shankar style which is Tony's specialty. The action
height approaches 7mm on the highest fret which is
about as low as you can go. That makes this a good
sitar for guitar players looking to cross over and
enables you to play fast more easily. The gourds are
Miraj grown, quite round but thin and strong. It's
an older style design, more of a round tabli that is
13 1/4 inches wide. Overall length of the sitar is
nice at 50 inches. There is an anti-rollover
attachment on the top of the neck for when the sitar
is on the floor without the top tumba on. The
original was replaced by a new one carved out
of Indian rosewood by the former owner who is a
woodworker. Other features are a double slot chikari
post and a beautiful upper bridge to compensate for
the scale length of the 4th string. Bridge and
fittings are deer antler, the sympathetic grommets
are modern style, custom sympathetic pegs and great
fitting.
The top tumba is quite large and comes with
a separate oversized fiberglass gourd case, the
sitar also comes with a fiberglass case of course.
Action is low and playing style would be light
touch. Comes with original receipts, a set of
strings, string hook, chalk, 3 mizrabs and a free
DVD of your choice.
