Kartar Chand ~ Hari Chand
Kharaj Pancham ~ Ravi Shankar style
Pre-owned approximately 20 years old
Don't see these through here too often!
This is a nice instrument in Ravi Shankar style by
Kartar and Hari Chand who were well known craftsmen
in Paharganj in New Delhi for many years. Both gone
now sadly, this one made by Hari Chand after his
brother Kartar passed away. They were the nephews of Rikhiram Sharma
and set up shop in Paharganj after the partition.
They were the subject of a nice thesis by
Scott Hackleman who
studied with them in the 80's as some may know. They
were well known among musicians and probably the
only actual sitar makers in Delhi to completely make
them in their shop.
Mahogany/tun wood, this is a smaller sitar
with a 12.75 inch tabli and easy to handle and play.
The top gourd is small and round and natural gourd.
Nice and seasoned with a great structure. Originally
hand carried to the US by a teacher for their
student. Has an inlaid OM on the tabli with a thick
antler main bridge. This sitar is a well loved
consignment, comes with a Delhi treble fiberglass
case and accessories. And as with all instruments
I've set it up in the "goldilocks" zone, neither too
open or closed and happy to adjust as you like.
