Srishti Jaipur electric-ready studio sitar
~ gandhar pancham
setting ~
6 main strings ~ 12 sympathetics
New from Srishti, this is the same sitar as
commissioned and played by
Indrajit
Banerjee on his non-classical gigs. We did some
R&D on this design with a few prototypes before it,
the idea was to have a sitar similar in construction
to the one played by
Niladri Kumar who
is quite popular in India and a friend of ours who
gave some valuable input. However, we wanted to
retain the sympathetic strings and natural sitar
tone at the same time as well as being able to go
full electric. This requires a thicker construction,
you don't want too hollow of a sound for humbucker,
etc. use. So we've pretty much nailed it now and
happy with the results.
The Jaipur studio is in Gandhar Pancham
style, has a brass backed jack but no internal
electronics leaving it open to all possibilities. There are a number of choices, it
sounds nice enough to play acoustically with a sweet
tone, jawari at a lower volume or you can choose
from a number of
amplification options here
or use your own. Very nice mahogany is
being used with synthetic bridges and fitting made
from Acrylic. Machine tuners for the mains,
traditional pegs for the sympathetics. The case is
tight fitting lengthwise being just under 45 inches
which enables you to take it on most flights in the
cabin, I personally tested this having brought it to
Hawaii and fits in the overhead nicely with not even
a second look from Alaska airlines (YMMV of course).
So this instrument fits a lot of needs from certain
musicians looking to travel and/or expand their
music into an electronic avenue.
The tone character is half open jawari,
medium action and touch and fully capable of playing
both classical and modern styles. We can install
almost any type of pickup needed at extra cost. Feel free to
email with your
ideas or questions. I've saved the last for best as
no more are being made for me in Kolkata, I can have
one custom made for you elsewhere just
email for details.
